Short-form video has become the default way people spend attention online, which means it's also become the default place platforms compete for creators. But not every platform that hosts video actually shares meaningful revenue with the people making it.

Three questions worth asking before you commit your time

  1. Is the payout tied to views, engagement, or something else? Views-based payouts reward reach; engagement-based payouts reward retention and re-watches.
  2. Is there a minimum follower or view threshold to qualify? Many programs gate earnings behind thresholds that take months to hit.
  3. Does the platform's own business model depend on you earning, or is it a side program? This is the real signal — platforms where creator earnings are core to the business tend to be more transparent and consistent about payouts.

What's changing

A newer wave of platforms are being built with creators sharing the upside baked in from the start, rather than an ad-fund add-on. That's a structurally different bet than the legacy platforms most people default to.
